Asynchronous vs Synchronous Telemedicine in Psychiatry

Asynchronous

No appointment necessary! This treatment modality uses technology to create a secure area to have a conversation with messaging and forms about your treatment.

Asynchronous telemedicine is more convenient and can enable a better clinical experience. This allows you to move at your pace, take as much time as you need to ask questions, fill out forms, and enables your APRN to better capture your condition to develop your unique treatment plan.

Please note: This type of modality is reserved for those who are stable on their current treatment plan. First time assessments may still require an in-person or virtual appointment based on services and insurance. Private pay patients will use a subscription based model of care to have direct access to their APRN.

Synchronous

Appointments are required (in person or virtual). This treatment modality is the traditional way psychiatry is conducted. Both the patient and the APRN need to engage at the same time in order for the appointment to happen.

All of this has to happen in a set amount of time, which can feel rushed. Sometimes important information is missed or you may feel embarrassed about bringing up certain details. There are scenarios when video or in-person appointments are necessary, especially when required by insurance or if you are taking a controlled substance medication.

Limitations

Please be aware that asynchronous telemedicine does have its limitations. This treatment modality is not ideal for individuals experiencing severe psychological, emotional, or neurological distress that are in need of immediate treatment and/or are experiencing a crisis. This includes severe substance use and/or withdrawal symptoms. Please use the appropriate services, such as calling 911 for medical emergencies, 988 for a mental health emergency, 211 for non-emergency community support, or proceed to the nearest emergency room if you are experiencing an emergency.

Our primary goal is to make sure that we provide the best care to our clients. In some cases, the limitations of telehealth do not provide the level of care that we think you deserve. In those cases, we can still provide feedback, select services, and assistance with in-person referral options. Your APRN will discuss when they feel you need a different level of care and assist you with the transfer process.
